Time in the toddler classroom time is spent, playing, exploring and learning new skills. Play is the work of toddlers who explore their environment and engage with materials that interest them to help them in order to learn about the world and how things work.
Toddlers follow a predictable daily schedule that structures their day in a way that allows them to feel secure by having a consistent routine, but introduce novelty such as new large and small group activities to support their curiosity.
The classroom is designed to be a space designed especially toddlers in mind. Chairs, tables and furniture are made for especially for their age so they can comfortably sit for snack and meal times and reach their materials from open shelves. The classroom is designed to be a space that is a home away from home for children where they feel secure and loved. A family picture wall allows for children to see their families throughout the day.
Toddlers explore their environment and select materials that interest them during free play. Teachers rotate toys and materials based on children’s interests, developmental levels and abilities. The schedule balances teacher led activities such as small group time, sing alongs and games with child directed activities such as free play or reading child selected books.
Art is offered often for children to express themselves using developmentally appropriate art materials to create open ended artwork that is displayed in the classroom.
Outdoor play is offered twice daily, weather permitting for children to get outdoors, enjoy fresh air and engage in gross motor activities. Toddlers need to move their bodies often and when they are unable to go outdoors, indoor gross motor activities are offered in a safe indoor space where they can run, dance and play simple games.
Toddlers eat family style for their meals, eating next to their friends and teachers at small tables seated in chairs. They practice using silverware and open cups and important skills such as not eating off your friend’s plates!
Days in toddlers are fun, busy and filled with hugs and laughs!
